报告内容提要：

Widow chastity in China’s history is regarded as the outcome of traditional Confucian thought. This study examines how economic factors play key roles in the formation of this cultural tradition by studying the causality between technological progress in the cotton textile sector and an increase in the number of widow chastity cases between the Ming and Qing Dynasties. We find that the incidence of widow chastity increased significantly if technological change in the cotton textile sector was fast and female labor demands increased. This result remains robust when the issues of widow chastity selection and alternative economic and cultural channels are addressed.

嘉宾简介：

王晓兵副教授2007年毕业于德国马丁路德-哈雷-维腾贝格大学，获得博士学位，2007-2009期间在德国中东欧农业发展研究所从事科研工作，2010-2015年就职于中国科学院农业政策研究中心，2016年3月加入北京大学现代农学院，获聘长聘副教授、博士生导师。主要从事农业科技发展与政策、农村要素市场（如劳动力和土地流转市场）、粮食安全和减贫研究。在国内外学术期刊发表学术论文60多篇，英文专著1部,包括发表在《World Development》，《Food Policy》,《Agricultural Economics》和《Nature Biotechnology》。基于相关研究结果，向中央和国务院递交多份政策报告，均得到国家领导人批示，为政府部门制定相关政策提供了重要决策参考。迄今为止，主持和参加了10多项国际国内合作项目。
